What Is a Fractional CTO?

What is a fractional CTO?

A fractional CTO is a senior technology executive who works with your company part-time — typically 1–3 days per week, or on a project basis. They provide the strategic technology leadership of a full-time CTO without the full-time cost.

The word "fractional" means you're getting a fraction of their time — but none of their capability. A good fractional CTO has typically been a full-time CTO at one or more companies. They bring that experience to bear on your specific situation.

What does a fractional CTO actually do?

The fractional CTO role varies by company, but typically includes:

Technology strategy and roadmap — Where should your technology be in 12–24 months? What needs to be built vs. bought? What's the sequence? • Architecture decisions — Cloud vs. on-prem, platform selection, how systems should talk to each other, what to build first. • Vendor evaluation — Which software, cloud provider, or agency should you hire? What questions should you be asking? • Team oversight — Managing your existing tech team, evaluating candidates, identifying gaps. • Leadership translation — Helping your CEO, CFO, and board understand what technology decisions mean for the business.

When does a company need a fractional CTO?

The clearest signals that a fractional CTO engagement makes sense:

Making a major technology investment. Cloud migration, platform rewrite, AI implementation — decisions of this scale benefit from senior oversight that your current team may not have.

Scaling fast without a technology leader. You have developers but no one setting direction. Work is getting done but not in a coherent direction.

Making vendor or platform decisions you can't evaluate alone. "We need to choose between three ERP options" is a problem a fractional CTO can solve quickly.

Building out a tech team. Who to hire first, how to structure the team, what the interviews should look like — fractional CTOs do this regularly.

What does a fractional CTO cost?

Fractional CTO engagements typically range from $3,000–$15,000 per month depending on time commitment and the complexity of your situation.

For comparison, a full-time senior CTO in the US costs $250,000–$400,000+ in total compensation. That's before recruiting costs, which often run 20–30% of first-year salary.

For most companies between $5M and $100M in revenue, a fractional CTO delivers the strategic oversight they need at 10–20% of the cost of a full-time hire.

At DataOps Group: Our fractional CTO and technical advisory engagements are fixed-price and scoped to your specific situation. We don't do open-ended monthly retainers by default — we prefer defined work with defined outcomes.

DataOps Group's approach to technical leadership

We offer fractional CTO and technical advisory services as part of our broader consulting practice. This means when you engage us in a leadership capacity, you also have access to implementation — we're not just advisors who hand off to your team.

Most of our technical advisory clients start with a defined project (cloud strategy, AI roadmap, platform decision) and continue the relationship on an ongoing basis.

Free initial consultation: we'll tell you whether a fractional CTO engagement is right for your situation — or whether a more targeted project engagement would serve you better.
