The Challenge
A family-owned boat rental business on Lake Norman, North Carolina, was running on a static HTML website that hadn't been updated in years. Customers could see photos of boats and a phone number—that was it.
The problem: potential customers were landing on the site, seeing no way to check availability or book online, and bouncing to competitors who made it easier. The owners knew they were losing business but weren't sure how to fix it. They also primarily spoke Spanish, which made working with most local web developers frustrating.
As native Spanish speakers ourselves, we were able to work directly with the owners in their preferred language—no translation layers, no miscommunication.
What We Built
We replaced their static site with a modern Next.js application featuring:
Online Booking System
- Real-time availability calendar showing which boats are free
- Simple booking flow that takes customers from selection to confirmation in under two minutes
- Automated confirmation emails in both English and Spanish
Stripe Payment Processing
- Secure online payments with deposit collection at booking
- Automatic receipts and refund handling
- PCI-compliant—no sensitive card data touches their servers
Mobile-First Design
- Most of their customers find them on phones while already at the lake
- Fast loading even on spotty lakeside cell coverage
- Easy-to-tap buttons and clear pricing
Bilingual Support
- Site works seamlessly in English and Spanish
- Booking confirmations sent in customer's preferred language
The Results
The impact was immediate. Within the first season:
- 20% revenue increase compared to the previous year
- Bookings at all hours—customers now reserve boats at 10pm for the next morning
- Fewer no-shows—collecting deposits online reduced cancellations
- Less phone time—owners spend more time on the water, less time taking calls
The owners told us the biggest change wasn't the revenue—it was getting their weekends back. Before, they'd spend hours on the phone coordinating bookings. Now the system handles it automatically.
What's Next
We built the platform with growth in mind. The next phase includes:
- Inventory management for tracking maintenance schedules
- Dynamic pricing for peak weekends and holidays
- Integration with their accounting software
Small Business, Big Impact
This project represents what we love about working with small businesses. No enterprise committees, no six-month procurement cycles—just business owners who knew what they needed and a team that could deliver it.
Lake Norman is part of the Charlotte metro area, one of our three main footprints along with Atlanta and New York. We're active in these communities and understand that local businesses have different needs than enterprise clients.
If you're a small business owner wondering whether modern technology is within reach, it probably is. The tools that power billion-dollar companies are now accessible at small business budgets—you just need someone who knows how to right-size the solution.
